BOOK NEWS AND BOOK DEALS ------------------------ 1.
-------- THE GULF COAST WRITERS RELIEF PROJECT offers free books to
writers who lost their libraries to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This effort,
initiated by Becky Rolland, a writer from New Orleans, and Seth Eisenberg,
Co-chairman of the National Writers Union at Large, has already grown to
include Fairgrinds Coffee shop and Pelican Publishing. Donations of gift cards
and books are sent to Rolland at P.O. Box 2067, Mandeville, LA 70470, and then
distributed to writers in need. A list of donated books is available and
shipping charges are pre-paid. For more information or for a request for books,
call 1-888-842-2493. 2. -------- ATRIA BOOKS will publish a
memoir by noted peace activist CINDY SHEEHAN, to be released in September 2006.
Senior Editor Peter Borland acquired World English rights to Ms. Sheehans
book from literary agents David Vigliano and Elisa Petrini of Vigliano
Associates. In 2005, Atria published 18 New York Times bestsellers. Atria Books
is an imprint of Simon & Schuster. 3. -------- Alan Ritz,
the best-selling author in six different categories on Amazon.com switched his
book to OUTSKIRTS PRESS (http://www.outskirtspress.com) last
quarter and increased his royalties from 15% to 55% as a result. For a
best-selling title on Amazon (currently ranked 469 overall) that translates
into big bucks. Mr. Ritz made his decision to leave his previous publisher,
AuthorHouse, after just two months due to strategic differences and the low
royalty. In Mr. Ritzs case, that margin differential translates to a
profit of nearly $14 for every book sold through Outskirts Press
distribution. 4. -------- HarperCollins Publishers and
Waterfront Media are joining forces to develop and market personalized content
online based on HarperCollins authors and their books. This relationship will
allow consumers exclusive access to customized content from these bestselling
authors. The joint effort kicks off with the launch of
http://www.jillianmichaels.com/,
the site featuring HarperCollins bestselling author Jillian Michaels
(Winning by Losing).

NEWS FOR NERDS --------------- 1. -------- A New study shows
more than 80 percent of consumers willing to pay more for books and magazines
printed on recycled paper. The majority of consumers may be willing to absorb
the extra costs some publishers have encountered in investigating a switch to
printing on recycled paper. Fourteen percent said they would not be willing to
pay an additional amount for a book printed on recycled paper, and 6 percent
said they didnt know whether or not they would pay more. For magazines,
16 percent of consumers said they would be unwilling to pay more, and 5 percent
were unsure. 2. -------- Broadband will continue to be adopted at
a rapid rate, and ultimately, reach levels of penetration comparable to other
popular consumer electronics. Higher broadband speeds will also increase
dramatically. By 2010, over 10% of U.S. households will likely subscribe to at
least 24 Mb/s service, and by 2015 penetration should exceed 50%. Internet
protocol video (IP video), especially high-definition (HD) IP video, is a key
driver for higher data rates. 3. -------- MagPortal.com (http://www.magportal.com) is a search
engine and directory for finding online magazine articles from hundreds of
online magazines. Hot Neuron has released a report analyzing the top search
engine queries and most popular articles based on statistics gathered during

TIPS TO GAIN CLIENTS BY VOLUNTEERING
----------------------------------------- RICK COOPER, The PDA Pro,
attracts clients to his business by volunteering in professional and trade
associations. Rick explains that every sales professional and business owner
should join a business networking group as a means to build relationships and
find referral sources. Increasing your client base isnt always
easy. Marketers will tell you that you need to know who your clients are before
you can market to them, but how is this done? Have you profiled your ideal
client yet? What industry is your client in? What do they buy? Where do they
hang out? All of these questions seem elusive when you dont know where to
start. One place to start is you! Where do you like to hang out and what are
your interests? Volunteering can be a great way to meet your ideal client.
The five key tips to gaining clients by volunteering are: 1.
Volunteer with passion! Volunteer with an organization that you really enjoy.
Other people see your enthusiasm and want to be near you. 2. Volunteer
in a role that speaks to you! Find a role that will showcase your talents.
Others will see you as an expert. 3. Establish rapport and build
trust. Follow through on your commitments and touch base on a regular basis.
4. Increase your visibility. It takes most people about seven
interactions before they will recognize you and know what you do. The more they
see you, the more they will become familiar with you. They will also be more
likely to promote you to friends and family. 5. Ask for referrals.
Business networking groups are ideally suited to giving and receiving referrals
and usually have processes that help reinforce this behavior. Overall,
volunteering is a great way to give back to your community along with gaining
more clients. People want to do business with someone they trust.
